About us

Bakerite has been making industrial bakeware from Westmead, Pinetown since 1997. We build and repair steel oven floor tiles, bread pans and custom trays for plant bakeries, retailers and hotels across South Africa.

Built in Westmead, Made for Working Bakeries

Bakerite started with a simple need that many South African bakeries still know well: bakeware that can take daily heat, heavy handling and long shifts without failing too soon. From our base in Westmead, Pinetown, we have spent close to three decades making the original Bakerite steel floor tile and supplying plant bakeries nationwide. Today we continue that work for operations that need practical equipment, reliable turnaround and straight answers about what can be repaired and what should be remade.

Our work sits in the middle of production. If an oven floor tile is uneven, a pan has warped, or trays are worn from constant use, the line slows down. We make and restore bakeware with that pressure in mind, because in a bakery there is no time for gear that only looks good on the quote. We know the conditions too, from coastal humidity in Durban to dusty inland plants and the load-shedding schedules that change how ovens are run and cleaned.

How We Work With Bakery Teams

We deal with plant managers, maintenance teams, procurement staff and bakery owners who need equipment that fits the way their site actually works. Some jobs are straightforward, such as replacing bread pans or making standard trays to size. Others need more care, like straightening damaged pans, repairing corners, fixing rims or carrying out weld repairs on tired equipment that still has life left in it. We also handle deep cleaning and fleet assessment so a bakery can see what should stay in service and what should be phased out.

  • Pan Recoating and Tray Recoating for worn surfaces
  • Pan Straightening for bent or twisted bakeware
  • Corner Repairs, Rim Repairs and Lid Repairs
  • Weld Repairs for cracked or stressed sections
  • Fleet Assessment for planned replacement decisions
  • Deep Cleaning and Spare Lids for day to day use

Our process is practical. We look at the item, the wear, the batch size and the way the bakery uses it, then advise on the most sensible route. That might mean repair, remake or a mixed plan that spreads cost over time. It is better to be honest upfront than to send out equipment that will fail again in a few weeks.

The People Behind the Work

Bakerite is led by Sibusiso Ntuli, our Managing Director, with a team that has hands on experience in production, operations, fabrication and customer support. Priscilla Naidoo manages operations, Themba Zulu supervises production, Johan van Rensburg oversees fabrication, Ayesha Khan handles sales and Lerato Mokoena coordinates service work. That matters because when a bakery phones with a tight deadline, the person taking the call understands who needs to see it, where it sits in the workshop and what the delivery pressure is.

We keep our team structure clear so customers are not bounced around. A bakery in Durban may need a quick assessment on tray condition, while a hotel kitchen in the Upper Highway may need a special order for smaller runs. The right person needs to answer at the right time, and we make that part of the service. It sounds simple, but in practice it keeps jobs moving and avoids mistakes that cost money later.

Materials, Fit and Daily Use Matter

Industrial bakeware has to work in heat, under pressure and often in harsh cleaning conditions. Our focus is on fit, durability and ease of use. Steel has to hold its shape. Welds need to stay sound. Edges must be made properly so staff can handle the equipment safely and without unnecessary wear. When trays or pans are made wrong by even a few millimetres, they can jam in racks, sit unevenly in ovens or slow down packing and washing.

We pay attention to the things that matter on the floor: rack clearance, oven dimensions, stacking, handling, cleaning access and the repeated knocks that come from a busy plant. If a tray fleet is going through daily cycling, it needs more than a quick patch. If a bakery is near the coast, the equipment may face extra corrosion risks. If a site is running through load-shedding, they may need to manage batches differently and inspect items more often. These are the realities we plan around, not afterthoughts.

Where We Supply and How We Support

From Westmead Supply and Pinetown Supply to Durban Supply, New Germany Supply, Upper Highway Supply and wider KwaZulu-Natal Supply, our work reaches customers across the province and beyond. We also supply nationally, because many plant bakeries need a maker who can produce to specification and ship reliably. Our base in Westmead keeps us close to industrial customers, transport routes and the kind of service calls that need a quick response.

We support bakeries, retailers and hotels with equipment that can be used day after day. Some clients want standard production runs, others need custom trays or special sizes for a unique oven set-up. In both cases, we aim to give clear pricing, sensible lead times and proper communication. If something changes, we say so early. That is part of keeping trust over years, not just on the first order.

What Drives Our Standards

Our values are straightforward: do the job properly, tell the truth about condition and lifespan, and make bakeware that suits the site it is going into. We know that bakeries work on margins, schedules and hygiene rules. Equipment has to fit those realities. It also has to be serviced in a way that respects shutdown windows, cleaning routines and municipal or site level requirements for waste handling and safe storage.

We have stayed in business by being consistent. That means answering calls, keeping records, checking details before fabrication and making sure repairs are done with care, not just speed. We also believe in a proper assessment before spending money. Some pans can be recoated and kept in service. Some trays need corner work and a straightening pass. Others are simply past the point where repair is sensible. Honest advice saves time and waste.

  • Practical advice based on use, not sales pressure
  • Workmanlike finishing for daily bakery conditions
  • Clear communication from first call to collection or delivery
  • Local knowledge of KZN sites and national supply needs

A Family of Sorts, and a Long View

When clients come back after many years, it is usually because the equipment did its job and the relationship stayed steady. That is how we like to work. Bakerite is not about grand claims. It is about making and repairing bakeware that earns its keep, supporting production teams when the pressure is on, and keeping things moving when ovens cannot afford unnecessary delays.

From our Westmead base, we continue to serve the baking industry with the same practical approach that started the business in 1997. If you need steel oven floor tiles, bread pans, custom trays or repair work that makes sense for a working plant, we are here to help.
