Our history

Bakerite started in Westmead, Pinetown in 1997 with a clear focus: make steel oven floor tiles and bakeware that can handle plant bakery use every day. Since then, the business has stayed in local hands, grown its team, and kept supplying bakeries, retailers and hotels across South Africa.

1997: A Westmead workshop with one clear job

Bakerite began in 1997 in Westmead, Pinetown, close to the industrial routes that link Durban, New Germany and the Upper Highway. The first work was practical and direct. Make the original Bakerite steel floor tile, build bread pans that could take repeat heat, and keep plant bakeries running with parts that fit the job.

From the start the business was set up for South African bakery conditions: long shifts, heavy tray movement, salty coastal air and equipment that must keep working when load shedding cuts into production time. That shaped the way we built and repaired bakeware, and it still does today.

Early years: earning trust one order at a time

In the early years, most work came from bakeries that needed steady supply and a supplier who would pick up the phone. There was no room for guesswork. A floor tile had to sit right in the oven, a bread pan had to release cleanly, and a tray had to match the line it was going onto. That meant careful measuring, straight fabrication and honest lead times.

The business grew by solving the same problems again and again, with better process each time. Customers in Durban and the wider KZN area started calling for repairs as well as new items, and the workshop became known for practical fixes instead of throwaway replacements.

  • Bread pans for daily production runs
  • Custom trays for bakery lines and food service kitchens
  • Repair work that extended the life of existing bakeware

Building a repair service around real bakery wear

As more bakeries relied on Bakerite, the service side became just as important as new manufacture. Pans were coming back with bent rims, cracked corners, worn lids and impact damage from busy plant floors. Instead of treating that as scrap, the team developed a fuller repair offering that could get equipment back into circulation. That saved money and reduced downtime, which matters when an oven line is booked solid.

Today our repair work includes pan recoating, tray recoating, pan straightening, corner repairs, rim repairs, lid repairs and weld repairs. We also do fleet assessment, deep cleaning and spare lids. It is the same idea the business started with in 1997, just with a broader set of services for customers who need equipment to last longer and work properly.

The Westmead base and the people behind the work

Bakerite remains based in Westmead, Pinetown, with production and service managed from the same industrial area that has supported the business for years. The location is practical for collections, deliveries and workshop access, and it keeps us close to the bread and tray users who depend on steady turnaround.

The company is led by Sibusiso Ntuli, Managing Director, with Priscilla Naidoo overseeing operations. The production floor is led by Themba Zulu, with Johan van Rensburg as Fabrication Foreman. Ayesha Khan handles sales, and Lerato Mokoena coordinates service work. That structure keeps jobs moving from quote to workshop to delivery without unnecessary delays.

From KZN supply to national bakery support

What started as a local Westmead supplier now serves plant bakeries nationally. The work still moves through the same kinds of needs, but the reach has grown. Customers call from Durban, Pinetown, New Germany and the Upper Highway, and also from further afield when they need a dependable make-or-repair supplier for commercial bakeware.

We continue to support different sectors too, including retailers and hotels that need custom trays and strong steel bakeware for regular use. Coastal humidity, transport wear and hard daily handling all affect the life of equipment, so the focus remains on making items that can be cleaned, repaired and used again. That is the kind of supply most buyers are after now, not just a once off order.

What has stayed the same since the beginning

Even as the business has grown, the core promise has not changed. Bakeware must fit properly, last as long as it should, and be backed by people who understand plant bakery work. If a customer phones about a dented pan, a damaged lid or a floor tile that needs replacing, the answer has to be practical and quick.

That approach is why Bakerite has remained in the market for nearly three decades. The tools may have changed and the service range has widened, but the habits have stayed the same: measure carefully, repair where possible, make only what is needed, and keep the bakery moving. For customers that means fewer interruptions and better control of costs.

  • Clear communication from order to collection
  • Repair first where the item can still be saved
  • Custom work for specific bakery lines and oven setups
  • Local support from a Westmead team that knows the trade
