Custom Pan Lids

Bakerite makes custom steel pan lids for replacement or new production, matched to the pans already in use at your bakery. We work from our Westmead, Pinetown base and supply plant bakeries, hotels and retailers nationally.

Steel lids made to match your pan fleet

Custom pan lids are made to suit the pans you already run in production, whether that is for loaves, buns, rolls or special product lines. The aim is simple: get a lid that sits correctly, protects the dough during proofing or handling, and holds up under daily washdown and stacking in a busy bakery.

We manufacture replacement lids and new lids for existing fleets, including older pans where the original covers are no longer available. In many plants, a lid needs to match the pan rim exactly, otherwise it will rattle, lift, or sit unevenly during transport. That leads to product movement, dust ingress and avoidable wear on the pan set.

Because we make industrial bakeware in Westmead, we can work off samples, measurements, or fleet details. That helps when the original supplier is gone or when the pans have had years of service and need something built to fit the same layout. For bakeries running long shifts, especially where load-shedding means production windows are tight, a lid that fits first time saves time and reduces handling.

Sizes, profiles and lid options

Custom lids are available in the size and profile needed for the pan body. Common orders are for single loaf pans, multi-compartment pans, tray covers and matched lids for special bakery formats. The lid can be made with a flat top, formed edge, handle points, or a profile that allows clean stacking in the crate or trolley.

  • Made to suit existing pan lengths, widths and lip details
  • Suitable for straight-sided or formed-edge pan sets
  • Can be supplied as replacement lids or with new pan orders
  • Options for reinforced edges where lids are handled often
  • Special sizing for deeper pans, narrow pans or mixed fleets

For plants in coastal areas like Durban, Richards Bay and the North Coast, finish choice matters because humidity and washdown can shorten service life if the lid is not maintained properly. We can supply lids to suit the way your team stacks, stores and cleans them each day. If your bakery uses a mixed fleet, we can separate the lid sizes and mark the orders clearly so the right set goes to the right line.

Where custom pan lids work best

These lids are used wherever pans need cover, protection or a matching top for handling. Plant bakeries use them on production lines, hotels use them for batch baking and service prep, and retailers may use them where product is par-baked, stored or moved between sites. They are also useful for bakeries that run contract work and need a lid that matches a client’s existing pan standard.

Custom lids suit operations where pans are repeatedly moved between proofing, baking, cooling and dispatch. They can help reduce contamination from dust, packaging scrap and handling during transport. If your bakery sends pans out on a delivery fleet, a well fitting lid also makes stacking neater and reduces the chance of product movement on bad roads or during long trips between provinces.

  • Plant bakeries with high daily pan turnover
  • Hotel bakeries and central kitchens
  • Retail bakehouses and commissary units
  • Contract baking operations using legacy pan sets
  • Sites needing replacement lids for damaged or missing covers

Installation, handling and production needs

Most custom pan lids do not need fixed installation. They are fitted by the bakery team during loading, proofing, storage or dispatch. The important part is that the lid and pan set are measured correctly so the fit is consistent from one tray to the next. If you are replacing only part of a fleet, it helps to send samples or clear measurements from several pans, not just one.

There is no direct power or gas requirement for the lid itself. It is a fabricated steel item that works with your existing bakehouse setup, whether you are on electric ovens, gas ovens or a mixed system. What matters is that the lid can handle the temperature cycle, the handling pattern and the cleaning routine in your plant. In some bakeries, a lid also needs to tolerate rapid movement between a cooler room and a hot area without warping, so material thickness and forming need careful attention.

If your team is running with limited power during load-shedding, having the right lid format can help keep batches organised while production is shifted around. That said, the lids must still be stored properly and not stacked in a way that bends the edges.

Care, recoating and repair support

Like most steel bakeware, lids last longer when they are cleaned, dried and stored properly. Do not leave them sitting wet after washdown, especially in coastal conditions where surface rust can start quickly. Avoid dragging them across concrete or metal tables, because that can damage the edge and cause the lid to sit badly on the pan.

We also support maintenance work where lids need repair or attention. If a lid has a bent edge, a split weld, or damage from rough handling, it may be possible to repair it instead of replacing the full set. Where fleets are ageing, a mix of straightening, corner repairs and weld repairs can bring usable items back into service and stretch the budget a bit further.

  • Deep cleaning for built-up grease and flour residue
  • Pan straightening and edge correction
  • Corner repairs and weld repairs where needed
  • Replacement lids for lost or worn items
  • Fleet assessment to identify what can still be saved

What to check before ordering

Before placing an order, check the pan type, the inside and outside dimensions, the rim style, and how the lid is meant to sit. If possible, measure more than one pan from the fleet because older pans can vary slightly. That is common in bakeries that have expanded over time or bought equipment in stages.

It also helps to confirm whether the lid must be interchangeable across all lines, or only for a specific product size. Tell us if the lids need handles, stack points, or a finish suited to a humid area. If you are not sure about the details, send photos, a sample lid or a sample pan to our Westmead base and we can work from there.

  • Pan length, width and depth
  • Rim or lip shape
  • How many lids are needed per fleet
  • Whether the lid must stack or lock in a certain way
  • Current wear, bends, rust or weld damage
  • Delivery town or site for supply planning

We supply from Westmead, Pinetown to Durban, New Germany, the Upper Highway and the rest of KwaZulu-Natal, as well as national plant bakery customers. If you need a replacement lid or a new set built to match an existing fleet, send the measurements and we will take it from there.

What clients say

Questions we get asked

Can you make lids to match older pans?

Yes. We can work from samples, measurements or fleet details to make lids for older pans where the original covers are no longer available.

Do the lids need power or gas to install?

No. The lids are fitted by hand during bakery handling, so there is no direct power or gas need for the lid itself.

What should I send when asking for a quote?

Send the pan measurements, rim details, quantity needed and a photo if possible. If the fleet is mixed, include the different sizes so we can quote correctly.
