Pan Racks

Bakerite pan racks help keep bread pans and trays in shape while making bakery floors easier to manage. Made in Westmead, Pinetown, they suit plant bakeries, retailers and hotel production rooms that need steady storage and clean movement.

What Bakerite Pan Racks Are Used For

Pan racks are storage frames built to hold bread pans, oven trays and matching bakeware off the floor and in a fixed position. That matters in busy bakeries where pans move from make-up tables to proofing, to ovens and then back through washing and cooling. A good rack keeps the load orderly, cuts down on bent rims and helps staff count stock faster at the end of a shift.

At Bakerite, we make industrial bakeware for plant bakeries and food sites that work long hours and cannot afford poor handling. A rack should support the pan properly, not just carry weight. If the frame flexes, the pans twist. If the spacing is wrong, the edges wear early and you start replacing good pans too soon. Our racks are built for practical use in Westmead, Pinetown and for delivery to sites across Durban, New Germany, the Upper Highway and further afield nationally.

Rack Sizes, Layouts And Holding Options

We supply pan racks in sizes matched to the pans and trays used in plant bakeries, retailers and hotel kitchens. The exact layout depends on the pan footprint, the number of tiers needed and whether the rack will be pushed by hand or moved on castors. If you need a rack for standard loaf pans, deeper bread pans, oven floor tiles or custom trays, we can work from your sample or drawing.

  • Single or double column layouts for narrow rooms
  • Fixed shelf spacing for repeat pan sizes
  • Open sides for quick loading and offloading
  • Braced frames for heavier daily use
  • Castor or stationary base options, depending on floor plan

For sites in coastal areas like Durban and along the KZN coast, we also look at airflow and cleaning access. Humidity, wash-down routines and salt air can shorten the life of weak frames. The right finish and spacing help reduce that wear, and keep trays from sitting with moisture trapped under them.

Where Pan Racks Fit Best In Bakery Workflows

Pan racks suit any site that needs neat batch handling. They are common in plant bakeries, retail bake-off rooms, hotel pastry sections and central production kitchens. They are also useful where floor space is tight and staff need clear walkways for trolleys, crates and dough tubs.

In a production room, racks can hold clean pans before use, cool pans after baking or separate damaged items from serviceable stock. In a hotel or retail setting, they help keep baking areas tidy and reduce the risk of dents during peak trading. They also make stock checks easier because you can see what is available at a glance instead of stacking pans in a corner and hoping nothing gets bent.

  • Plant bakeries running multiple shifts
  • Hotel kitchens with limited prep space
  • Retail bakeries and in-store bake-off areas
  • Wholesale producers needing stock control
  • Sites where floor organisation matters for safety and cleaning

Installation, Power Needs And Site Setup

Pan racks do not need gas or electrical supply. They are a manual storage solution, so they can be installed almost anywhere a bakery floor can support the load. That said, the site still needs a sensible layout. Racks should sit on a level floor, with enough clearance for loading, cleaning and movement around ovens or proofing areas.

If the rack will be moved often, castors must match the floor condition and the weight of the pans being stored. On rough concrete, poor wheels will fail early. On polished indoor floors, we check braking and turning space so the unit does not drift during loading. Bakerite can advise on layout when you are fitting out a new line, replacing old storage or reorganising after a floor plan change. We often work with teams in Pinetown and surrounding industrial areas where the traffic flow is busy and every metre counts.

There is no special utility connection needed, so pan racks are a good option during load shedding too. Production can still continue if your storage, prep and clean-up areas are set up properly. That is one reason many bakeries keep racks as part of their main handling system rather than as spare overflow only.

Care, Cleaning And Long Service Life

A pan rack lasts better when staff keep it clean and do not overload it. Flour dust, dough residue and moisture should not be left on the frame for long periods. A quick wipe-down after use, plus regular checks on welds, shelves and wheels, will help prevent early wear. If the rack is used in a humid area, dry it fully after washing so moisture does not sit in joints and corners.

Bakerite also offers related servicing for the bakeware that sits on those racks. We can assist with pan recoating, tray recoating, pan straightening, corner repairs, rim repairs, lid repairs, weld repairs, fleet assessment, deep cleaning and spare lids. That matters because a good rack only works properly if the pans stored on it are still in usable shape. If the pans are warped or badly damaged, the rack gets blamed for a problem that started elsewhere.

  • Keep the load within the rack rating
  • Do not drag overloaded units across rough floors
  • Check castors and brakes weekly
  • Remove bent pans before they damage the stack
  • Wash and dry after heavy flour or oil build-up

What To Check Before You Order

Before ordering pan racks, measure the pans or trays you want to store and confirm the outside dimensions, not only the baking surface. Check how many items you need to hold per rack and whether the unit must pass through standard doors, store rooms or cooler areas. If the rack will move between rooms, note any thresholds, narrow passages or floor falls.

You should also confirm the finish, loading style and cleaning routine. A rack for a dry goods area may be different from one used near wash-up sinks or in a humid coastal bakery. If your team moves stock by hand, the handle height and castor quality matter. If you use fork lifts or pallet jacks nearby, the base design must suit that traffic. Please send clear measurements and a sample if possible, it saves time and avoids mistakes.
