Send A Sample

If you have an existing pan or tray that needs matching, send it to Bakerite in Westmead, Pinetown and we will work from the sample. We use the original item to check size, corners, rim shape, fixings and finish so the new piece suits your line, oven and handling needs.

How the sample matching process works

Start with one good sample, even if it has wear, bends or old repairs. Our team checks the body size, depth, fold lines, lip shape, handle points, corner style and any special features that affect fit in your plant bakery, hotel kitchen or retail bake room.

Once we have the sample, we compare it against the actual use on site. That helps us see whether you need a straight copy, a small improvement for heat movement, or a stronger build for daily loading and unloading. If the item has been in service for years, we can still read the pattern and make a practical replacement.

  • Send one sample only if it is a standard item used across your line.
  • Send two samples if the item is worn, bent or has repairs that need checking.
  • Include any old labels, notes or photos if the pan or tray was used in a specific oven bay.

What to include with the item

A clear note saves time. Tell us what the item is used for, how many pieces you need, and whether you want new manufacture, recoating, repairs or a combination. If the sample is from a plant bakery in Durban, Pinetown, New Germany or further afield, mention the oven type and the way staff load the pans because that affects how the edges and corners should be finished.

Please also tell us if the sample has a fixed lid, loose lid, welded part, or special support points. If you are replacing a broken piece, note where the failure happened. A cracked corner, thin rim or twisted base tells us a lot about the working conditions and we can take that into account.

  • Your company name and contact person.
  • Best contact number and email, including sales@bakerite.co.za if needed.
  • Quantity required and preferred turnaround time.
  • Any measurements you already have, even if they are approximate.

Packaging the sample for courier or collection

Wrap the sample so it does not scratch other goods or damage itself in transit. A pan or tray that still carries dough residue, flour or old coating should be packed in a way that keeps loose bits from shifting around the box. In humid coastal areas, a dry wrap helps reduce surface rust before it reaches us.

For larger pieces, add cardboard between stacked items and tape the bundle firmly. If the item is sharp, bent or has broken welds, protect those edges first. We work with customers across KwaZulu-Natal and nationally, so a proper pack makes collection and delivery much easier, especially when schedules are tight and load-shedding has already disrupted the day.

  • Use a strong box or crate that will not collapse under the sample weight.
  • Mark the parcel clearly with Bakerite, Hillclimb Rd, Westmead, Pinetown.
  • Put the contact name and phone number on the outside and inside.
  • If collecting in person, keep the item ready for handover and check the count against your note.

What we can confirm from the sample

From the sample we can usually confirm the practical build details that matter on the floor. That includes depth, flange width, lip style, corners, reinforcing, lid fit and whether the item needs straightening before it can be copied properly. We also check for wear patterns that may point to oven heat, handling pressure or repeated stacking.

This is useful when you are trying to keep a line consistent across stores, branches or production shifts. If one bakery branch in Upper Highway is using a slightly different tray from the Pinetown branch, the sample helps us identify the difference before more items are made. That saves time and avoids the wrong batch being produced.

When a sample needs repair before copying

Sometimes a sample is too bent, thin or distorted to copy as is. In that case we can still use it to guide the pattern, then recommend pan straightening, corner repairs, rim repairs, lid repairs or weld repairs before new work goes ahead. If the item has seen years of use in a busy hotel or plant bakery, that is normal and usually fixable.

If the base is badly damaged, we may ask for a second sample or photos from another angle. This helps us avoid carrying a fault into the replacement piece. We can also do a fleet assessment if you have several trays or pans across one site that need checking together.

  • Flat sections that have bowed from oven heat.
  • Corners that no longer sit square.
  • Rims that have cracked or pulled away.
  • Lids that no longer close properly.

Send it to our Westmead base

Bakerite is based in Westmead, Pinetown and we supply plant bakeries, retailers and hotels from Durban and the wider KZN area to sites across the country. If you are unsure whether a sample is worth sending, rather call first and describe it. A quick conversation often tells us whether the piece should come in for copying, recoating or repair.

When the item arrives, we log it, inspect it and contact you if we need a second sample or extra detail. We keep the process practical and direct, because most customers want a clear answer, fair turnaround and a product that fits first time. That is what the sample is for.

Questions we get asked

Can I send a worn or damaged pan sample?

Yes. A worn or damaged sample is often still useful, because it shows the original shape and where the failure started. If it is badly distorted, send photos with it as well.

Do you need measurements if I am sending the sample?

Measurements help, but they are not always necessary if the sample is clear. If you know the length, width and depth, add them to speed things up.

Can you match trays for more than one branch?

Yes. If the same item is used at multiple branches, send the sample with a note listing each site and the quantity needed. We can keep the line consistent across locations.
